Matt and Andy Bicep first squeezed our attention years ago, well probably just three years ago, but in internet years, that may as well have been a decade- SO a decade ago, we came across a music blog called feel my bicep. There was nothing trendy about it, some of the music was new, much of it was old, and some of it didnt even exist within the conventional concepts of time and space, but rather in an area reserved only for nerdiest of all music nerds.

NOW

Matt and Andy have moved onto sculpting dance music, with years spent sharing fantastic music informing their brilliant productions. Their single 'Darwin' on the Rapture's Throne Of Blood label, is equal parts 'actual music' and 'party jam'. A track that sounds equally at home in a 90's warehouse as it would in a dim sum speakeasy in a Blade Runner future. A second EP proved them to be much more than a one trick show pony, and a recent 4 track ep of 80's disco edits exemplified their love for sleaze, and simply having a really great fucking time.

So the 30% of you that actual read these write ups should by now realize that this will indeed be a night for love dancing and giving summer one last epic go at it.

This is a long time coming for us, watching, waiting, youtubing, googling for glimpses and sounds of the myth that is the Norseman Terje.

Years ago, via soulseek or some other relic of the internet that isn't worth remembering, we first stumbled across his comme de moodymann edit of CHIC's 'I want your love'. Using Yahoo? or maybe it was Ask Jeeves? we dug up all we could on the Terje, he had remixed another bearded Norwegian 'Lindstrom' and had the aptly named and incredibly catchy 'Italian Stallion' coming out on Full Pupp.

Years went by, leaking brilliant live DJ mixes from castles in scottland and over 100 edits of songs from every genre yet known to exist, and his norse mythos continued to grow. His reputation established him as one of the most respected and fun loving DJ's traveling the globe.

We even received a text from a family member in Australia last year that simply read 'Life haz bean altered 4 evar moore' (sorry- no translation, i can't read australian) after attending a tango terje helmed party.

It all culminated in this years incredibly original 'Snooze 4 Love' EP for Running Back, which finally ushered in the chance for him to tour North America properly.

No press release could really sum up the wild taste and variety he brings to his DJ sets.

WOOLFY ARRIVES

It was a pact formed in blood that the Evening Standard would eventually host a live show. WOOLFY's croon over heard drifting from the earphones of a babe across the aisle on the night bus had haunted us for years.
His name had been found scrawled on a crumpled page under the heading IDEAL BOOKING sometime during the witching hour between day and night and not sure.

...BUT BUT BUT

...We then heard whispers, oft spoke in hushed tones from DJ's that travelled from far away places. Tales were told of WOOLFY, not just being a maestro of intergalactic sex music, but also being a DJ of the highest order. Stories were told to us of disco drum loops, re-imagined house cuts and coconut bras everywhere. Words like 'initimidating' - 'impossible to follow up' - 'murder' - and 'nipple slip effect' were all used to describe simon WOOLFY james' DJ'ng abilities.

Thinking that this would all be very appropriate for an EVENING STANDARD, we opted to bring in the english born, LA based WOOLFY to DJ and have him tear apart any last feelings of winters bite and give everyone's legs a reason to feel alive again.

If your not familiar with his own tunes. Its well worth taking the time to do so. His work with Projections lead to an incredible LP on Permanent Vacation. Highlighted with simmering beautiful tracks like 'Carry On' and 'Neeve'.
Singles on RONG like 'odyssey' gave us all a timeless piece of summer engraved in a black 12" vinyl.
A full LP on DFA carried his haunting vocals across the love jam rythms of "Looking Glass' and " Two Far Gone". Let your ears drink it up.

Despite a shady origin story involving future times, lost space pods, and love sectors- one thing is clear: SDC knows how to compose electronic music that's far more dimensional than anything experienced this side of the Gamma Sector.

Records on Clone Royal Oak and the legendary R&S are future love and get down' frequencies pressed onto mortal polycarbon platters suitable for use on human controlled turntables. These records have made an immediate impact on modern day media and dance floors. As dancers and music geeks alike form beneath the BBD Alignment.

While an endless galaxy worth of space puns and trans-dimensional alliteration could be used to describe SDC's sound. Its simpler to just say that its beautifully composed forward thinking music that's suitable for equal parts and dancing and loving.

Last year, or perhaps the year before last, we started hearing an incredibly catchy track, it sounded future and classic all at once, like a forgotten acetate discovered in a motor city garage sale being played for the first time 20 years after its creation.
Eventually some time spent with DJ google led us to the tracks name, the fellow behind it, and the realization that this wasn't made in a dusty detroit basement, but rather a tidy apartment in Ghent.

The track was "Let's Go" by FCL which is comprised of SAN SODA and 'We Play House' label boss RED D.
After buying the record, we realized that yet another song we'd been hearing everywhere with similar body commanding effects- 'More Than Seven (dub)' was also the work of FCL. The tracks were charted everywhere, making multiple 'top of the year lists' and getting plays from fella's like Motor City Drum Ensemble and Gerd Janson.
Thats all it took to convince us to drink the "We Play House" Kool Aid and become permanent fans of the label and San Soda's music.

The Belgium label 'We Play House' began with the release of San Soda's first EP after Red D and San Soda met through playing on the same football team (soccer, ahem).
Multiple EP's later and a full album, San Soda has continuously impressed with an innate ability to compose beautiful melodies in varying styles and tempos. Whether its the instant party of 'Birdies that Fly', the nostalgic sounding 'Middelmatig in 1993 ' or the cinematic feel of 'Juno Love', its clear this is the musical output of some one whose grown up on a steady diet of euqal parts tasty house, disco, techno, hip hop and pop.

We are very very pleased to be able to bring him to Toronto for a DJ set. His mixes online are a very worth while listen. While a quick youtube search reveals him playing everything from Armando to Midas Touch to Hall and Oates (count it!!!)

Last march we convinced the good people at the Drake that they should let us do a party in their little basement with the tidy sound system.
We couldn't promise much- we'd come and play music for people to dance to, and hopefully people would come and enjoy themselves.
We booked one of our favorite DJ's, Eli Escobar, because no one really knew who we were.
And despite Adam being held financially hostage by South Korean Fashionis...tas in LA and missing the gig, people still came, and danced, and enjoyed themselves enough that we got to do it again.
The next party was with Soul Clap. They drove themselves here and played one of the greatest sets we'd ever heard. We had a great night, they played some song about having 'one too many drinks' and everyone lost about 5lbs from all the dancing.

Anyhow, as it goes, we've been lucky enough to have had a wonderful slew of guests that have constantly redefined our definitions of 'having a great time'.
To all are friends have been coming from the start, thank for liking music and dancing as much as you like booze.
To everyone we've met along the way, thank you for your support, and telling your friends to come with you. WE HAVEN"T HAD A SINGLE REQUEST FOR TOP 40 in 2011 and we thank you for that!
Great tunes and great guest DJ's would be nothing would out great people being there to party with.

so, for our anniversary, we thought it only made sense to reach out to some local friends who have given us a tonne of support from the start.

James Teej and Aaron Santos aka THE KINGS ARMS will be joining us for this fam jam. While Teej has toured the world and released an LP on Rekids, he's started this new project with Aaron and the results have been brilliant They've already signed a track to Wolf +Lambs black label, and put together a brilliant mix for the notorious Louche podcast series.

We'll be returning to our old home of montreal this weekend to make dance with old friends and perhaps show enough people a good time to make some new ones.

On thursday Paul will appear members-(L)onely alongside the night trackin' fellas at their Blizzarts weekly 'The Ballers Social Club' . A smooth fam jam of sorts, dripping in nostalgia as this is the tiny spot we first played together at.

On Saturday we make a return to Velvet to play with the ever rad Shaydakiss at her LUXE monthly. Last summer when we played velvet it turned out to be one of our best gigs of the year. The dancefloor/dungeon stopped moving after the security made us turn off q-lazzarus' 'goodbye horses' as we burned well past last call. We hope to make it all the way to the end of 'goodbye horses' and then some, this time around.

Jamie Jones is like an egyptian mirror system reflecting a booty moving beam of disco base lines and RnB screams down the dark and winding hallway of modern underground dance music.
He makes music that sounds all at once classically retro and futuristic-ally dark and sleazy, while infusing it all with a tasteful sense of 'good times'.

He is making seriously great music, while avoiding taking himself too seriously. Its an impre...ssive feat we're all too glad to receive the results of. Whether its his timeless hit 'Summertime' , his Curb Your Enthusiasm sampling in 'Ruckus', or the clothing removal effects of 'Nasty's Party' -its music that satisfies the three head nodding nerds in the corner, and the room full of people dancing closer with one another- all at once.

Partnered with Lee Foss, the two make music as 'Hot Natured' and run the 'Hot Creations' imprint, which has been a breath of coconut scented rnb/disco/house fresh air vibes perma pressed into 12" that crossover extremely well.

The Hot Natured parties in such locales as miami and detroit have provided some of the best pixelated and distorted youtube party videos out there.

SO Its only appropriate that we have him paired up with a 4am license.

Its been a great year, we've been so fortunate to receive such wonderful support since the launch of our monthly 'Evening Standard' party back in March. From our friends old and new and the Drake Hotel.

While we took off december, we will back at it on January 15th with a very oh so special guest we will announce after the fall out from new years promo over load dies down.

There were many tracks we loved this year, and we could try and list as many as possible, (actually we just tried to do that and decided otherwise). But we realized goods songs are nothing without having great people there to enjoy them. You'll hear our favourite stuff in an upcoming mix, and on any night we play.

The latest single from Marcus Lambkin , aka Shit Robot, is a brilliant followup to last years Simple Things 12" .
Dark piano Loops echoing in Ward C of Shutter Island
are paired with the vocals of Saheer Umar (of House of House infamy) and some jacking bassy synths to form one Mad House track.....zing (i'm really reaching here, like Dr. Cawley and his two day psychiatric role play....jeeezus)

While 'simple things' had Ian Svenonius ad-libbing a nursery rhyme straight out of Sarah Conner's diary, 'I Got A Feeling' has Saheer belting out a heavy lovers lament. Its starts off very restrained, but after a long build all the elements get set loose Andrew Laeddis style.

But 24hrs ago Holy Ghost took their track I Will Come Back and blended it with Yearning by new DFA label mates Black Van.

New release from a ficticous man, on a label named after a ficticous dinosaur.

(thats right, a brontosaurus is actually just an apatasaurus, there was a mix up in skeletons at some point that led to the belief that there was a new species of sauropod, BUT, there aint, and any third grader can tell you that, doye. )

Keeping things in the vein of a more retro styled deep house sound is the Arto Mwambe M.O., and Love Lift is no exception. The synths tread a fine line between fromage and brilliant homage (much like that sentence) , and the vocals are completely over the top and perfect for this production.

The Osborne remix on the flip adds in a killer bassline that adds a warm strut to the original deep sound, definitely my pick of the three versions.

Soul Clap re-heat the Baker Mans Bread

In 1989 Danish duo Laid Back , ( of cocaine equestrienne disco pop fame) penned 'Baker Man'.
With saxophones that sound like fireworks, sunset guitar plucking, and a smooth doughy bassline it's one damn fine piece of easy listening.

I could gush on,

But I think I'd never do the song justice the same way Lars Von Trier's music video did:

I won't attempt to sit here and posture to be some Danish pop archivist. (BTW: A UK 'dance' remix of 'Bakerman' hit number one on the Greenland charts in 1996, just so you know)

Because if it weren't for Boston's exceedingly brilliant Soul Clap digging this track up , cutting, filtering, pasting, and adding some club ready kick to it, my knowledge of laidback would have started and ended with 'Whitehorse'.

This 12" came out on Airdrop last week, and will most likely never leave our sets.

'Yearning' has an incredible cinematic feel that puts your right there on that elevated chrome highway. Steady cruising at a fictional speed amongst neon billboards warning you against trusting androids..........which you ignore as you look deep into your android GF's eyes and rip on out of town.

Its hard to listen and not think about victories at sunset, getaways into multicolored night skies, and kisses in outer space.

The Emperor Machine mix on the flip has the churning acid and synths of the action that took place before, complete with lazer effects, and 'password confirmed' noises.

Its seems to be a fine start to 2010 for anyone with a passing interest in synthesizers turned to 'strut', and vocals turned to 'stun' as Tensnake's 'Coma Cat' EP has dug up some a pristine Anthony and the Camp production and reshaped it perfectly for now, ditching the unnerving 'hot tub' vibes of the original and prepping it for 5 months from now when it's actually warm out, and people are ready to enjoy themselves again.

John Selway and Elliot "Ulysses" Taub released this in the fall on the revamped Wurst Music Co.
Somewhere in District 9 the Nuerotic Drum Band must have fed those Prawns some old Strictly Rhythm records 'a la' The Believers, and the electro strut of Synapse, then traded them cat food for the results, which is clearly this EP.

This is a stunning edit/remix/sampling/whatever of the classic Reel 2 Reel track of the same name.
Apparently, besides creating two of the better tracks this year (this and Vacuum Boogie ), he has a day job splicing cells or molding atoms, or something like that.

The nonsense dub mix is also worth tracking down, no lyrics, but a great piano line.

I slept on this track for a while, but since discovering via a very helpful recommendation of 'Vacuum Boogie', we've had it as perfect company alongside the tracks from The Revenge/ Mark E/ Eddie C that usually make up the entirety of our pitched down moments.

Over the next three days, we'll post tracks (with limited downloads) we loved from this year, and the songs we paired them with so often they became inseparable, like us, in our sorry excuse for a dj partnership/friendship.

Soul Clap takes some Fleetwood Mac, inserts great percussion, vocal delay, and a thunderstorm (actual precipitation and cloud movement) as the break down. One of the best pop edits we came across this year, and it makes everyone get really cozy with each other on the dance floor. Its a good thing

Well as this year winds down, and the lack sharing that we have done on this blog becomes increasingly apparent, its time for us to sweeten you egg nog fueled living room boogie downs with a song we've been loving for a while now.

Not only did Linkwood (family) put out one of the most impressive long players of the year, with SYSTEM
(go check now, this has at least five songs to burn dancefloors with and the rest all have a specific time and place you will use them for)

BUT

They also put out a brilliant 10" with House of Traps on Fire Cracker Records.

This all builds on top of an very catchy kick, and is preceded by some distorted mumbling about house and disco music.

Invisibility cloak edges closer

Tiny holes all over the cloak bend the light around the bump
Scientists have rendered objects invisible under near-infrared light.
Unlike previous such "cloaks", the new work does not employ metals, which introduce losses of light and result in imperfect cloaking.
Because the approach can be scaled down further in size, researchers say this is a major step towards a cloak that would work for visible light.
One of the research teams describes its miniature "carpet cloak" in the journal Nature Materials.
This "carpet" design was based on a theory first described by John Pendry, from Imperial College London, in 2008.
Michal Lipson and her team at Cornell University demonstrated a cloak based on the concept.
Xiang Zhang, professor of mechanical engineering at the University of California, Berkeley, led the other team.
"Essentially, we are transforming a straight line of light into a curved line around the cloak, so you don't perceive any change in its pathway," he explained.
This is not the first time an invisibility cloak has been made, but previous designs have used metals, whereas the carpet cloak is built using a dielectric - or insulating material - which absorbs far less light.
"Metals introduce a lot of loss, or reduce the light intensity," said Professor Zhang. This loss can leave a darkened spot in the place of the cloaked object.
So using silicon, a material that absorbs very little light, is a "big step forward," he says.

There Will Be Disco

With some shit hot new disco infused artists, a new Hot Chip record, and co-founder Tim Goldsworthy producing the overdue sophmore Cut Copy album, this is going to be a big year for the boys down at Death From Above records......and... honestly?....its about time. DFA was supposed to be THE label of the NYC disco revival, fusing classic disco and early House, with experimental tendencies and post punk habits......but lately, besides LCD Soundsytem, Hot Chip, and The Juan Mclean, things have been a little too quiet.......or sounding dissapointingly average.

DFA has been making some moves, and its a good thing, mums.

With new artists like 'Hercules and Love Affair', and the two man outfit' Holy Ghost!' heads are going to vibe and remember just how good this NYC disco sound can be.

Heres a small Mix i put together as a little sampling of how the artists mentioned above along with the new Hot Chip and Cut Copy albums, are going to bring it in for the real thing on the dance floors in 2008

Bastard in a Basket-DFYAY mix

1. Dance to the Underground- Radio Four
This isn't new at all, actually its from one of DFA's first ever compilations released quite a few years back. Radio 4 are a post punk band from NYC. They describe their music as "made in New York, is about New York, and sounds like New York".
Reading that description makes them sound like double layer douchebags, but after you listen to this song you'll think of how wrong you were and how just simply honest that statement is.
Its in the mix cause i love it and its the compilation that turned me onto the label.

2. Holy Ghost!- Hold On
'Its like a scream inside a scream'- who else writes lyrics to dance music like that? Thats an instant classic. Perfect haunting string synth keeps up the ghostly vibes. You heard of space disco? Well this is ghost disco. Good vocals, great piano melody, and fatter than a bloated corpse synth to keep your ass looking good. Back and forth, back and forth.

3. Hercules and Love Affair- Blind
A project of the mastermind you will come to know simply as Andrew Batler, this piece of classic disco/early house brilliance is so good i think he's running the risk of having everything he does from now on existing in the shadow of this song.....Though from.... what.... i've heard of the rest of the album he is certainly no one trick hellenistic demi god pony. Great bass, classic percussion and horns that tie well together with the vocals which are part of a collaboration with Antony Hegarty of 'Antony and the Johnsons' (sidenote, doesnt he look just like the hermaphrodite Seth Rogans character hooks up with in 'Freaks and Geeks'?)
There has also just been a video released for this song, it features a innocent greek girl entering a steaming 'Eye's Wide Shut' meets' 300' type orgy.....but of course? right? Theres also a little controversy involving some of the extras vibing a little too hard at the orgy and getting down with one another on set.
How much do you like this band already without even hearing their music?

4. Ready For the Floor-Hot Chip
Remember when you listened to there last album and thought it was nothing like their debut record? Well the trend of reinvention continues, as Hot Chip's sound evolves once again. Whether its for better or for worse will be yammed on and on about......but why not just vibe a dancefloor and enjoy how tight this group is sounding?
Alexis Taylors vocals are some of the most melodically beautiful out there, and many of their signature bleeps and percussions have carried on into this album. Its like that friend who went to live somewhere much cooler than you, and every time he comes back to visit theres something exciting and new about him, like a calculator watch, but deep down he hasnt changed and he's still your bud......and thats why you dont kick his ass for being a better person than you.

5. Lights and Music - Cut Copy (Boyz Noise Happy Birthday remix)
I know putting up the remix may be a little silly, but we'll worry about that later. Firstly, you need to undestand that its been three years since Cut Copy's 'Bright Like Neon Love' was almost as good as having Alan Braxe and Fred Falke in indy band form. Now they're finally back, and with none other than DFA's Tim Goldsworthy taking over production duties, things are looking promising. So though technically, they aren't on DFA, I had to include them because of Goldsworthy's involvement, and the fact that there is a fair bit disco inspiration throughout the record. Its sounds really kinda gay, but in a reallly good way.
Its coming in february, and its kind of a big deal.

I put up the Boyz Noise remix to show that this german aint just a one note distortion lava electro doom vocoder kinda guy. He can take a group like this and add just the right amount of his cut up sound with out burning out the soul of the original, which i thought was great to hear.

Its been far too long since anything has happened here, and probably even longer since anyone has even had a visit.

Privateyes - our monday at Blizzarts, is done, as the commute from toronto/ottawa is just a little too far for an evening of pints and george benson.

As mentioned before we are now living in different cities, but will soon be unified in toronto. We just cant quit each other, nor montreal, as we've been back numerous times already to play at Tokyo, Coda, and Saphir....if you were there, thankyous, it was good times.

So for the time being, I (paul) have alot of time on my hands and thought i'd get off other peoples blogs and start doing something about our own. I'll be posting songs, links to articles, mixes and assorted mundane photographs to fill out this blog and give myself some sense of purpose before my job starts.
